Professor Paul Brand (1961) has worked as a consultant paediatrician for respiratory and allergic diseases at the Isala Women and Children’s Hospital in Zwolle, the Netherlands, from 1997 to 2018. He is currently the Dean of Medical Education and Faculty Development at the same hospital, and professor of Clinical Medical Education at the University Medical Centre in Groningen, the Netherlands.
Most paediatricians know Paul from his research on preschool asthma and on adherence to daily controller therapy in children with asthma. Currently, Paul’s research interests focus on the art and science of becoming a medical specialist, and remaining a happy one throughout one’s career. He works on learning evidence based medicine skills, shared decision making, providing effective and constructive feedback, and on the learning environment in clinical medical education. Paul has contributed to more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has edited acclaimed textbooks on medical education and paediatrics in Dutch. He published two novels in the Dutch language. He is married with five children. His hobbies include writing and mountain biking.
