Silvia Bressan

Silvia Bressan, MD, PhD is the head of the pediatric emergency department and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Padova, Italy. She is the chair of PERN (Pediatric Emergency Research Networks), coordinating the dialogue between member networks and collaboration between large numbers of researchers and investigative sites across the world.

Her research and clinical interests focus on acute pediatric conditions, including head trauma and concussion, on which she published over 50 papers. She also coordinated and published the Italian Guidelines on pediatric head injury and she has recently coordinated the translation in Italian of the CISG Sport Concussion Assessment Tools. Her other research interests include medical simulation and, more recently, artificial intelligence.  

She has published over 150 peer reviewed papers, and has secured substantial funding from local, national and international competitive grants.

Professor Maria Giżewska is a pediatrician specializing in inborn errors of metabolism. Maria Roberta Cilio, MD, PhD,  is a Professor of Pediatric Neurology at University of Louvain School of Medicine, Brussels, Belgium. She serves a neonatal and pediatric epileptologist at Saint-Luc University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, where she coordinates the BRACE (Brussels Rare And Complex Epilepsies) consortium, full member of EpiCARE. She is the former director of Pediatric Epilepsy Research and director of Neonatal Neuromonitoring at the Benioff Children’s Hospital, University of California San Francisco, where she received the Presidential Chair award in 2011. Before joining UCSF, she was the Director of Neonatal Neurology and Neurophysiology at the Bambino Gesú Children’s Hospital in Rome, Italy. Dr. Cilio is an internationally trained physician scientist. She obtained her medical degree at the University of Rome, Italy, completed her training in Pediatric Neurology at the University of Louvain, Belgium, and a fellowship in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology at the Bambino Gesú Children’s Hospital in Rome. She earned her PhD working in Greg Holmes’ lab at Harvard University on the consequences of seizures in the developing brain. She served as a member of the ILAE Task Force on Neonatal Seizures where she contributed to the development of the new classification for seizures and epilepsies in the neonate. In addition to early onset epilepsies, Dr. Cilio has a special interest and expertise in neonatal and pediatric epilepsy and neurocritical care. Her research focus on diagnosis, phenotyping, and treatment of seizures and epilepsies in infants and neonates.

Juan Pablo Kaski is Professor of Paediatric Inherited Cardiovascular Medicine at the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science, where he leads the UCL Centre for Paediatric Inherited and Rare Cardiovascular Diseases, and Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), London, UK. He is the Director of the GOSH Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases.

His clinical and research interests are focused on the clinical and genetic characterisation of cardiomyopathies and other inherited cardiovascular disease, and sudden cardiac death in childhood. He leads an internationally recognised research programme in the field of paediatric cardiomyopathy, having established a unique clinical cohort and the only UK bioresource for paediatric inherited cardiovascular disease, with the aim of stratifying disease phenotypes and identifying novel therapeutic targets.

He is Secretary/Treasurer of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Council on Cardiovascular Genomics and sits on the Executive Board of the ESC Cardiomyopathy and Myocarditis Registry Programme. He has also served as Chair and Secretary of the Association for European Paediatric Cardiology (AEPC) Working Group on Genetics, Basic Science and Myocardial Disease.

He leads an international paediatric HCM consortium of over 65 centres, which was responsible for the development of the first sudden death risk prediction model for childhood HCM. He chaired the Task Force for the 2023 European Society of Cardiology Cardiomyopathy Guidelines.

  • He is a specialist in pediatric immunology, oncology, hematology, pediatrics, and clinical transplantology at Wroclaw Medical University, Poland.
  • Kalwak’s research and guidelines have been widely published in Poland and internationally. He is the National Coordinator for HSCT in primary immunodeficiencies and metabolic disorders, as well as for the treatment of CML and congenital neutropenia.
  • Kalwak currently serves as the Chair of the Pediatric Diseases Working Party of the EBMT, a board member of the I-BFM SCT group, and a member of the Inborn Errors Working Party of the EBMT.
  • In November 2019, the clinic was authorized by Novartis to offer commercial CAR-T cell therapy (Kymriah®). Prof. Kalwak was the first physician in Poland to use CAR-T cells in a pediatric patient with refractory ALL (March 2020). Since then, almost 50 more children have received this revolutionary cell therapy.
  • In October 2024, he introduced autologous hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy for SCID-RAG1 (the first patient outside the Netherlands)

Ruud Nijman is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at Imperial College London with a special interest in observational studies and clinical trials in diagnostics and clinical decision making in paediatric emergency medicine and acute childhood infections. He is also a consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at St. Mary’s hospital – Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust in London – and divisional academic lead for Emergency Medicine. He originally trained as a medical doctor at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2007). He completed his PhD in Paediatrics and Clinical epidemiology at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on the topic of diagnostic strategies for children with fever at risk of serious bacterial infection presenting to emergency care (2014). He also completed an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences (2011). His academic work has focussed on the recognition and management of children at risk for serious bacterial infections presenting to the emergency department. This includes the development and evaluation of point-of-care tests, the discovery and validation of biomarkers, understanding trends in epidemiology of acute childhood infections, and improving clinical decision making in the emergency care of acute infections. Ruud co-authored two children’s books to promote patient education of children presenting to the emergency department. He is an active steering committee member of the Research in European Pediatric Emergency Medicine (REPEM) network and a member of the executive committee of the European Society of Emergency Paediatrics (EUSEP).

Russell Viner Professor of Adolescent Health at the UCL Institute of Child Health in London, a paediatrician and adolescent physician working with young people with diabetes at University College Hospital and he directs the Department of Health Obesity Policy Research Unit.

Russell set up the first Adolescent Medicine service in the UK and went on to become the UK's first Professor of Adolescent Health, helping lead a new focus on adolescent healthcare in the UK and Europe. He has acted as an advisor on adolescent health and obesity for the Departments of Health and for Education in England and for the World Health Organisation and Unicef internationally.

His research focuses on population health, policy and health services for children and young people, with a particular focus on obesity. He has published over 200 peer reviewed papers and is currently named on research grants with a collective value of more than £20 million.

Russell Viner has significant ‘hands-on’ experience within the NHS, having been Clinical Director in a busy teaching hospital and clinical director for children and young people for the NHS across London, responsible for leading healthcare strategy for London’s two million children and young people.

Prof Valiulis initiated the first Baltic Paediatric Congress (BPC) in 2011 and was the President of the 1st and 4th BPC, organised together with the Spring Meetings of EAP/UEMS-SP. In 2020, he established the Human Ecology Multidisciplinary Research Group and led air pollution, climate change and child health research at Vilnius University. He is elected as Honorary Professor of Poltava State Medical University (Ukraine) and  Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK).

Lidia Ziółkowska is a Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at the Department of Cardiology in the Children’s Memorial Health Institute, Warsaw, Poland. She is a Consultant in pediatric cardiology at this hospital and other Polish pediatric cardiology centers. She has specialization in pediatrics, cardiology and pediatric cardiology.  She leads the Department of Pediatric Cardiology at the Center for Postgraduate Medical Education in Warsaw and has been a lecturer for many years for physicians specializing in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.

Her clinical and research interests are focused on the clinical and genetic characterization of cardiomyopathies and other inherited or acquired cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death in childhood.

She is the Chair of the Main Audit Committee of the Polish Pediatric Society, vice Chair of the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Pediatric Society, member of the Working Group on Genetics, Basic Science and Myocardial Disease of the Association for European Paediatric Cardiology (AEPC). She is a member of an International Pediatric Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Consortium, which was responsible for the development of the first sudden death risk prediction model for childhood hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Junko Takita

Professor of Pediatrics at Kyoto University and President of the Japan Pediatric Society

Junko Takita, MD, PhD

Junko Takita, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Pediatrics at Kyoto University and President of the Japan Pediatric Society. She is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist with extensive experience in leukemia, neuroblastoma, and pediatric solid tumor research. Dr. Takita has made seminal contributions to the discovery of oncogenic ALK mutations in neuroblastoma and to multi-omics characterization of high-risk pediatric leukemias. She has received numerous awards, including the Japan Pediatric Society Prize and JCA-Woman Scientists Award. Actively engaged in international collaborations, she continues to advance pediatric cancer genomics and clinical translation, aiming to improve outcomes for children worldwide.

My talk will address the current challenges and future prospects of pediatric care in Japan from a global perspective, highlighting demographic shifts, child mental health, and the role of female physicians.

Zbigniew Nawrat

He is theoretician physicist by profession (University of Silesia Degree in 1984), who the own whole professional activity associated with the medicine (Doctorate of Medical Academy of Silesia in 1997 – subject artificial heart, 2013 habilitation – subject medical robotics). He is an author of pioneer researches in artificial organ domain, especially heart prostheses. Polish ventricular assist device POLVAD was first clinically applied in 1993. Still in use. 1,400 were sold. The longest, almost two years, the patient has had a successful heart recovery. He is a father of cardiac surgery robot Robin Heart - which is a first Polish and European telemanipulator for heart surgery (licenses for one of the Robin Heart models PVA were sold in 2019). He is also a pioneer of application the computer simulation & virtual space technology to surgical planning process. Currently, it is developing the possibilities of implementing AI and expanding the field of application of robots in medicine. Zbigniew Nawrat works in Medical University of Silesia (ass.

prof. in Biophysics Department) as well as in Foundation of Cardiac Surgery Development as Creative Director now. He is a member of Biomechanics section of Polish Academy of Sciences. He is an organizer of many conferences and workshops e.g. annually: BioMedTech Silesia, Surgical Workshop, Medical Robots Conference. He founded the International Society for Medical Robotics in 2010 – president till now.

He created and publishes (editor) the journal Medical Robotics Reports.

Hobby: Poet, composer, musician, sailor. He released the music album “Rok dobrego człowieka” ("A Year of Good Man") by ZAWRATU (you can find Spotify/YouTube ...).  He lives and works in Zabrze (Silesia region), where he was born in 1960.

Arjan B te Pas

Arjan B te Pas

Arjan te Pas is a neonatologist and neonatal researcher working in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit in Leiden University Medical Center. Next to his clinical work, te Pas has established a research program “Perinatal transition and neonatal resuscitation”. His aim is to expand the knowledge in (patho)physiological processes during the perinatal transition and to develop the best strategies for neonatal resuscitation. He performs experimental studies, for which he closely collaborates with fetal and neonatal physiology expert Prof Stuart Hooper. The pre-clinical experimental findings are then translated to the clinic by performing clinical studies with physiological measurements in newborns at birth, which are then be used to inform protocols for large clinical trials. As a third pillar of his research program, te Pas has experience in developing new technologies needed for the clinical translation of experimental findings. Profs te Pas and Hooper have been very successful in establishing a truly bi-directional (clinic-to-laboratory-to-clinic) research program.Te Pas is a Veni (2012) and Vidi (2016) laureate of the Veni-Vidi-Vici Innovational Research Incentives Scheme for talented researchers of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). He is author of more than 300 scientific publications and his research has influenced the international neonatal resuscitation guidelines on several items.

Dr. Julia Erdi is a Paediatric Resident at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She is deeply committed to advancing paediatric care and education across Europe, currently serving as the Secretary of the Young European Academy of Paediatrics (YEAP). Dr. Erdi believes international collaboration is the key to success and possesses a strong background of international clinical experience, having completed clerkships and visiting doctor rotations in Canada (London), the USA (Buffalo and Mayo Clinic), and Germany (Munich, Heidelberg and Göttingen).
